Typhoons and butterflies

Greetings from Taiwan...

This is my new blog especially for my stay in Taiwan. I arrived last week, greeted by a Typhoon, which thankfully soon fizzled out. However my first impression was marked by the enormous black butterflies that flitter over various flowers and orchids. Although most of these butterflies are black or dark brown many have different colours and markings on their lower wings. Some are the size of my hand and flutter past my face lazily in the hot humid air. There are a few smaller European varieties but they are well out numbered. I wondered how they would survive the typhoon but they managed somehow, though some did look a little frayed at the edges the following day.

Over the coming weeks I want to document the nature and also post all things Taiwanese ...
