River sculptures

Today was spent in Taichung 台中 the third largest city in Taiwan. I spotted this bird perched on one of four interesting stone sculptures buried in the river. Having never seen such a bird before I was convinced it was part of the sculpture at first until it eventually moved. It behaved much like a heron and was almost as big so it may well be related but there is certainly nothing like it in Europe.

Update: I have since discovered that the bird is probably a Black-crowned Night Heron.
